THE ARABESQUE WAY
At Arabesque, we believe snorkeling is more than just dropping people off in the water with a mask, snorkel and fins, or pulling them along as operators sometimes do.
We want to do things right, and offer our guests a proper experience, which is safe, respectful of our marine environment, and also lots of fun.
Our snorkel experiences are fully-guided snorkeling tours, led by experienced diving professionals.
Our staff will guide you, and always be on hand to help you with technical and safety advice, as well as helping you find and identify cool marine life.
At Arabesque, we believe time spent together, on land or in the water, is a time for learning and sharing.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION &FLOW
The Arabesque snorkeling program is a 2 hour to 2.5 hour experience, depending on conditions and your physical abilities.
We will meet up at the dive center or, in the summer months, directly at the snorkeling site, either the Sokodo coral reef or Yaene (we can sometimes come and pick you up if our schedule allows, but this would need to be arranged in advance).
We will bring all the snorkeling equipement (mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit and life-jacket for children – we also have life-jackets for adults not too comfortable swimming in the sea), and free Go-Pro 4 rental if required.
We ask participants to already be wearing their swimsuits when coming to the dive center or the snorkeling site.
After filling in some simple paperwork, we’ll start by a small training session on how to use snorkeling equipment efficiently, namely your snorkel, mask and fins.
We’ll also intoduce some basic skills we will practice together in the water: how to clear the snorkel, how to clear the mask, how to swim efficiently with fins, how to turn in the water and how to rest.
Your guide will give you a briefing on the snorkeling site itself, covering safety procedures and recommendations such as staying close to the guides, as conditions can change quickly in Hachijō, and current can pick-up rapidly, for example.
We will also give you an introduction to the site’s marine life, covering eco-friendly guidelines how to snorkel responsibly and care for our marine environment, and also how interact respectfully with the marine life we might encounter (such as Hachijō’s famous green turtles!)
After this, we will get into our wetsuits and all head to the water together, and practice our basic skills together. Once everone is confortable, we will start our snorkeling session!
Your guide will by carrying a buoy or life-ring, and stay with you during the entire session, guiding you to interesting areas, spotting marine life, and helping out with any issues you might have in the water.
At the end of the snorkeling session, we will return to the car, where we’ll hand out towels and drinks, and share impressions!

Prerequisites:
No prior snorkeling experience is required, but participants must know how to swim
Participants must be over 6 years of age
Participants over 60 years of age must be be in good physical condition, as snorkeling is a moderately intense physical activity, especially if there is a little current
Authorisation by a parent or legal guardian is required for participants under 20 years of age
