PADI OPEN WATER DIVER COURSE

You’ve never dived before, or maybe already did a couple of try-dives that left you yearning for more, and would like to learn to dive?

The Open Water Diver course will teach you the knowledge and skills required to dive safely and give you the freedom to explore the underwater world.
As a certified PADI Open Water diver, you will be able to dive with a buddy to a depth of 18m/60ft.
PADI is the biggest diver training organisation in the world, which means your Open Water Diver certification will be recognized anywhere worldwide.

At Arabesque, we believe in personalised training, and teach in small groups (with no more than 4 students per diving instructor), and doing things right to turn our students into a safe, autonomous and efficient divers.

The course can be a lot of fun, but keep in mind that it is a proper learning and training session, where you will be taught both theoretical and practical skills you will use and build on all your life as a diver.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

THEORY

The PADI Open Water Diver course includes a theory section, where you will learn about the theory of diving, safety, skills. diving equipment and the marine environment.

This part of the course implies knowledge development by reading a physical or online manual, with knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter, watching video material and completing a final exam at the end.

You can work on this theory section online from your home, in your own time and  at your own pace, by signing up for the E-Learning program.
That way, when you come to Arabesque, we’ll just review the theory together, fill in the gaps and focus on practical aspects of diving.
More on this below.

PRACTICAL SKILLS

The rest of the Open Water Diver course is practical, in-water training, where you learn to use the equipment, diving technique and everything you need to know to… become a diver!

This practical trainng is divided between 5 sessions in a pool or pool-like environment (confined water), where you will learn and practice the basics, and 4 ocean dives in an actual diving environment (open water), where you will confirm what you have learn in the pool.

The practical training covers aspects such as setting-up and caring for diving equipment, how to use it effectively, safety drills and exercises, and learning how to dive safely, efficiently, and in an environmentally-respectful way by controling your underwater buoyancy.

Once you have finished the theory, and have successfully mastered what is taught in the practical sections, you will be a certified PADI Open Water Diver, a certification which will allow you to dive anywhere in the world, with a certified buddy, to a maximum depth of 18 meters / 60 feet.

The Open Water Diver Course is best spread over a minimum of 4 days, which gives us more to time to adapt to your specifc needs.

A 3-day course is possible, but only if you have already finished the theory through E-learning Theory Program.

Even for a 4 day course, we highly recommend working on the theory online through the E-learning program.
This will help you learn more efficiently reduce your workload at the dive center. It will also give us more time to focus on important practical skills and confort in the water.
When you’re learning to dive, it’s more fun to be in the ocean than in a classroom!

E-LEARNING:
study theory & prepare for your course online

sub, diving, scuba-2296460.jpg

We highly recommend that you complete the PADI Open Water Diver Theory class online (e-Learning) before you arrive and take the practical part of the course with us at Arabesque.

E-Learning is also a requirement if you plan to do the course in 3 days at Arabesque.

Preparing the theory through e-Learning saves time, allowing us to maximize your time in the water and to focus on practical skills.
E-Learning also increases your understanding of the theoretical part of the course, since it allows you to read and work on the material at your own pace and in your own time.
We will also be reviewing what you have learned at the dive center, and work together on on anything that needs to be cleared up, which will definitely increase your understanding of diving theory.

If you plan on doing the course in 4 days or more, doing the theory and practical aspects at the same time at the dive center is possible, but note that this can be quite intense – keep in mind that the Open Water Diver Course is a real course, with a lot of material to read and understand, which can be a little overwhelming if you are short on time and tired from doing your practical in-water training at the same time!

Which is why we strongly recommend working on the theory and preparing for the course at home before coming, which will help you as a student, give you more time in the water, and help us as instructors by giving us more flexibility to focus on your specific needs.

E-Learning programs can be done for any PADI courses, but we more than recommend it for the Open Water Diver and the Rescue Diver courses, which have extensive reading and theory to complete.

Please note that you will need to pay a separate fee to PADI to enrol in an e-Learning program.

SCUBA REFRESHER

The scuba refresher is a flexible 3 to 4 hours long program designed to help certified divers get back in the water – you’ll review key safety-related knowledge and refresh your diving skills by practicing them in a protected dive site or pool-like environment.
If you’re already quite comfortable, it can also be a good time to work on some specific skill with an instructor, in a relaxed setting.

We understand… Life happens, and it’s not always easy to dive as much as you’d like… Sometimes it’s been more than a while since your last dive, and your diving skills might feel a bit rusty.
Or you might just feel a little nervous about diving again for various reasons, and would like to deal with this before going a real dive.

There is no set rule, but we would recommend doing a refresher if you’re relatively new to diving / have little diving experience, and haven’t dived for over a year.
If you’re more experienced, says with hundreds of dives, then this could be a longer period, 2 or 3 years with no diving, for instance.

But this really depends on how you feel.

Doing a scuba refresher is simple way to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment in the water, and get the re-adaptation-period out of the way to get the most out of your first “real” dive with us.

Please note it has been more than 3 years since your last dive, depending on your experience as a diver, we might also require that you take part in this program to ensure your safety and comfort on the dives you do with us.

DO YOU NEED A SCUBA REFRESHER?

Here are some points to consider, which might help you decide if it might be better for you to do a scuba refresher:

          General guidelines

  • Not having dived for a long time (example one year for someone with new to diving, or 2/3 years out of  the water for an experienced diver.
  • Have been diving in very different conditions from ours
  • Holding a partial diving certification such as the Scuba Diver rating

           Personal comfort

  • Do you feel overly nervous and apprehensive about diving again?
  • Do you feel slightly unfit, compared to when you were diving last?
  • Did something happen while diving, that is making you nervous to dive again?
  • Is there a basic skill that you’re not comfortable with? (example: mask clearing, buoyancy)
  • Are you diving with new equipment that you’ve never used before?

    Basic diving skills

  • Do you remember how to set-up diving equipment?
  • Do you remember how to use all your diving equipment?
  • Do you remember how to equalise your lungs, ears and mask?
  • Do you remember how to clear your mask?
  • Do you remember how to adjust your buoyancy underwater?
  • Do you remember how to deal with an out-of-air situation?
  • Do you remember what a no-decompression stop limit is?
  • Do you remember how to use a dive computer?
  • Do you remember the ways to limit risks of decompression sickness?
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Arabesque Scuba refresher is a flexible 3 to 4 hours long program designed to help you get back into diving.
You’ll get to talk about your previous diving experiences with an instructor, then review basic basic dive theory/safety procedures at the dive center.

We’ll then go to a protected dive site, review the equipement and basic safety skills, and get used to being underwater again.

This is not a course, but if there is enough time left and you’re feeling confortable, we can also use this time work on a specific skill (frog-kick finning technique or buoyancy brush-ups, for example).

PADI ENRICHED AIR・NITROX DIVER COURSE

Interested in increasing the safety of your dives, and extending your bottom time?
Diving on Enriched Air (Nitrox) is the way to go!
Diving on Enriched Air Nitrox is now highly popular around the world, and even mandatory on multiple dives a day liveaboard cruises, for instance, where bottom times are quickly limited by the diver’s nitrogen build-up when diving regular air.

Diving Enriched Air Nitrox reduces a diver’s nitrogen load per dive, which allows for longer no-decompression stop limits, and increases the overall physiological safety of the dives.

As the name implies, Enriched Air Nitrox is mixture of NITROgen + OXygen, just like regular air, but which is enriched in oxygen, i.e. more than the standard 21% O2.
And having more oxygen in the mix means breathing in less nitrogen.

The PADI Enriched Air Nitrox specialty course is a practical course requiring no actual dive for certification.
It focuses on planning dives using Enriched Air by understanding and managing oxygen exposure, safety and emergency procedures, and practical aspects such as analysing oxygen content in your scuba tank before the dive and setting your dive computer for diving with Enriched Air.

At Arabesque Dive Center, Enriched Air Nitrox 31% is offered free of charge to divers, meaning you will be able to apply the contents of course straight away, and get practical experience of diving on Nitrox!

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The PADI Enriched Air Nitrox course requires no diving.

It is a 1/2 day course, requiring the student to read and understend material, and complete a final exam.

The instuctor will review the theory, including oxygen exposure management, safety and emergency procedures on land and in the water.

The student will then learn to analyse the oxygen content in a scuba tank before diving, to set a dive computer for diving with Enriched Air and to check and understand Maximum Operating Depths according to the mix used.

PADI ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVER COURSE

Let’s be clear, despite the name, taking the PADI Advanced Open Water course will not turn you into an advanced diver as soon as you finish the course and get your certification card. In diving. this only comes with actual experience.
However, the course will fine-tune and build on the skills you learned in your Open Water Diver course, which will turn you into a more solid and confident diver, with everything you need to advance your diving as your dive count increases.

There is no minimum numbers of dives required between the Open Water Diver course and the Advanced Open Water Diver course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course includes five ‘Adventure dives’ that will strengthen skills you already have, as well as teach you new ones.

There is reading and theory to be completed, but this is all self-study (which can also be done in advance, through the PADI e-Learning program), and the program can be quite flexible, as some modules take only 15/20 minutes underwater to complete.

In the course, the Deep dive and the Underwater navigation dive are compulsory.
Theese modules will respectively train you to dive safely to a maximum depth of 30 metres / 100 feet, and introducing you to underwater navigation using a compass and natural landmarks.
And we strongly urge all divers to complete the Peak performance buoyancy dive, to work on your underwater buoyancy, trim and weighting, and expand your understanding of the ballast-lungs. This module takes up one full-dive, to really have time to work on things.

This leaves you with two adventure dives of your choice, from the following: Underwater Naturalist dive, Fish ID dive, Project Aware dive if you are interested in the diving environment and conservation (you should be!), the Delayed Surface Marker Buoy dive, Night dive or Enriched Air Adventure dive (if not already Nitrox certified) or the Boat dive if you are interested in learning practical skills, and the very straightforward Boat dive, if you to want to take it easy by learning more on proper boat diving techniques. We can give you more information on each dive objectives and requirements to help you decide.

If you are on a tight schedule, or can’t complete all of the requirements for the Advanced Open Water Diver Course in time (due to weather issues, health or personal ability) you can nevertheless earn the PADI Adventure Diver rating by completing 3 out of the 5 Adventure Dives.

FACTS & DETAILS

Course Duration: 3 day minimum (there are 5 training dives to be completed for the full Advanced Open Water Certification)
